Trick-or-Train: A Festive Fitness Twist
October isn’t only about costumes and candy – it’s the perfect chance to make fitness fun and have a laugh with a few creative, seasonal ideas:
- Pumpkin Power Circuits – swap dumbbells for pumpkins to add a playful challenge to squats, overhead presses, and lunges.
- Zombie Bootcamp – set yourself a chase-style HIIT routine to get your heart rate up in a fun way. Include Zombie squats (squats with your arms out straight), Zombie walks (walking lunges with your arms outstretched), spider climbers (mountain climbers and creep like a spider) and coffin hold (plank).
- Monster Mash Dance Session – pop on a playlist of Halloween classics an dance it out for a mood-boosting calorie burn (think Thriller and Ghostbusters).
Cosy & Healthy: Halloween/Bonfire Night Treats with a Twist
Halloween isn’t just about sweets and spooky costumes – it can be the perfect time to get creative with healthy eating and exercise. Instead of the usual sugar-heavy treats, try whipping up themed snacks that are both fun and nourishing. Think ‘monster mouths’ made from apple slices and peanut butter, pumpkin hummus served with vegie sticks, or roasted pumpkin seeds for a crunchy, protein–rich snack. You can still enjoy the seasonal flavours while keeping your energy steady for the festivities.
Bonfire Night is the perfect excuse for hearty warming dishes, and you can still enjoy all that cosy comfort without the sugar overload. Try:

Lighter Parkin Cake – rich gingery and perfect with a cup of tea.
Ingredients – makes 8-10 slices
- 100g unsweetened applesauce
- 50g coconut oil
- 50g black treacle
- 50g golden syrup (or maple syrup for a lighter option)
- 100g wholemeal flour
- 50g oats
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp ground ginger
- ½ tsp ground cinnamon
- ½ tsp mixed spice
- Pinch of salt
Method:
- Preheat oven to 160°C and line a 20cm square tin with parchment.
- In a small saucepan, gently heat the applesauce, coconut oil, treacle and syrup until combined. Remove from heat.
- In a bowl, combine the flour, oats, baking powder, spices and salt.
- Pour the wet mixture into the dry mixture and stir until fully combined. The batter will be thick. Spread evenly in the tin and bake for 25-30 minutes. Test with a skewer – it should come out clean (a few moist crumbs are fine).
- Allow to cool completely before cutting into squares. Store in an airtight container – it keeps well for several days.
Other smart seasonal swaps include roasted vegetable trays, wholesome burgers, or pumpkin-infused soups and jacket potatoes. And for a sweet treat – homemade toffee apples, spiced biscuits, or even mindful marshmallow toasting – just in smaller portions.
By making small swaps and adding a touch of creativity, you can enjoy Halloween and Bonfire Night without the sugar crash or sluggishness that often follows. This way, you get the best of both worlds: the spooky fun of the season and the satisfaction of knowing you’ve looked after your body.
Halloween/Bonfire Night is a time to have fun, let your creativity run wild, and make memories with the people you care about. Whether you’re dressing up, or trying out some spooky-themed workouts, embrace the season and enjoy every moment. Find that balance between treating yourself and taking care of your body, so you can feel energised, strong, and ready for whatever the rest of autumn brings. I’m definitely looking forward to enjoying all the spookiness and food with Poppy 😊
Much Love
