Meal Prep to Save Your Sanity this September

Batch, Freeze, Breathe – Family Meal Prep That Saves Your Sanity This School Year

It’s that time of year again. Hopefully your kids are now settled back into school, but with it comes the whirlwind of packed lunches, after-school clubs, forgotten PE kits, and the dreaded question: ‘What’s for dinner?’ If you’re already feeling the chaos creeping in, you’re not alone. But there’s a powerful (and surprisingly simple) way to take some of the pressure off your plate – meal prepping. Specifically, batch cooking and freezing meals for the whole family.

It’s as simple as batch, freeze, breathe :)

Here’s how meal prepping can help you reclaim your evenings, reduce stress, and keep everyone well-fed, even when life gets hectic.

Why Meal Prepping Is a Back-to-School Game Changer

When the kids are in school, time becomes your most precious commodity. Between morning routines, school runs, work meetings, and homework marathons, dinner can become a stressful scramble, often not thinking about it until it’s that time and you want to eat. That’s where meal prepping shines.

By investing a little time upfront to plan, cook, and freeze meals, you’re setting your future self-up for easier evenings, fewer dishes, and far less decision fatigue.

Plus, prepping meals ahead helps you:

  • Save money by avoiding last-minute takeaways or impulse buys, which are often not as healthy as home cooked meals, but significantly more expensive.
  • Reduce food waste by using ingredients more efficiently. It’s easier to use things up when you’re making a large batch of something.
  • Stick to healthier eating habits with balanced, homemade meals. You decide exactly what goes into your meals.
  • Get the whole family involved – kids love picking meals and helping with prep!

How to Get Started

1) Batch

Choose a handful of family-favourite recipes that freeze well and can be made in big quantities. Think pasta bakes, stews, curries, soups, meatballs, or chilli, we have more ideas in this post.

Dedicate a couple of hours one weekend to cooking them up in batches.

Make double (or even triple) portions where possible.

Top tip: Make sure you have enough containers or freezer bags before you start! Label everything with the name and date so you’re not playing ‘freezer roulette’ later 😊

2)  Freeze

Let meals cool completely before freezing. Portion them into family-size containers or even individual portions for those late nights when everyone’s eating at different times.

Want to level up? Freeze in flat bags to save space and defrost faster.

Most batch meals will last 2–3 months in the freezer, so you can rotate your stash and keep things interesting. Make sure to take things from the back so that they don’t get left.

3) Breathe

This is the best part. When school nights get busy and your energy’s gone by 6pm, all you have to do is grab a meal from the freezer, reheat, and relax.

Throw together a quick side salad, microwave some rice, or serve with crusty bread and dinner is done.

You can spend your evening talking to your family, helping with homework, or dare we say it… putting your feet up.

Bonus – Involve the Kids

Meal prepping doesn’t have to be a solo mission. Get the kids involved by:

  • Picking recipes for the week
  • Stirring sauces or helping assemble lasagnes
  • Labelling containers with fun names or drawings

This not only saves you time but helps teach them valuable life skills. Plus, they’re more likely to eat meals they helped make, setting them up to be healthy, organised, curious about what goes on their plate and confident in the kitchen.

Your Sanity-Saving Strategy Starts Now

Meal prepping isn’t about being perfect. It’s about making life just a little bit easier. And during the back-to-school season, easier is the name of the game.

So, whether you’re feeding a house full of hungry teens or a mix of picky eaters and adventurous palates, batch cooking and freezing meals can be your secret weapon.

Because when dinner’s already done, you get to breathe! 😊
