Lounge, Laugh, Lunge
Holidays are all about switching off, soaking up the sunshine, and letting your worries melt away like ice cream on a hot beach. But while your mind is unwinding, your body might not be feeling the same bliss—especially after long flights, car rides, or snoozing in unfamiliar beds. That’s where a little holiday stretching comes in. Yep, it’s time to flex those muscles, even in paradise 😊
Why Stretch on Holiday?
We get it – holidays are a time to relax, not to run laps. But stretching isn’t a workout; it’s a gift to your body. Whether you’re exploring a new city, hiking scenic trails, or simply lounging by the pool, stretching helps you feel better, move easier, and keep that holiday glow from the inside out.
Plus, stretching boosts circulation, reduces stiffness (hello, airplane seats), and can even help you sleep better. And the best part? You don’t need a gym, yoga mat, or any equipment—just a few minutes and a patch of space.
The Travel-Tightness Trio
When you’re on the go, these are the three areas that tend to get tight:
- Hips – from sitting too long (planes, cars, cafés).
- Hamstrings – from walking more than usual or sitting awkwardly.
- Back and Shoulders – from carrying luggage, awkward sleep positions and unfamiliar beds, and travel stress.
Let’s loosen things up with some easy, on-the-go stretches. Breathe slowly in each stretch. Inhale through your nose, exhale through your mouth to help your muscles relax.
5 Easy Holiday Stretches
You can do these pretty much anywhere—on the beach, in your hotel room, or under a shady palm tree. Aim to include them in your daily routine throughout your holiday and then keep that habit going – your future you will appreciate it!
1. Standing Forward Fold (hamstrings, calves, and lower back)Stand tall, then hinge forward from the hips, letting your arms dangle toward the ground. Bend your knees slightly if needed. Take a few deep breaths and feel gravity do the work.
2. Seated Twist (spine and shoulders)
Sit on a chair or beach towel. Place your right hand on your left knee and twist gently to the left, looking over your shoulder. Hold, breathe, then switch sides.
3. Lunge Stretch (hips and thighs)
Step one foot forward into a lunge, keeping your back leg extended and hips low. Hands can rest on your front knee. Hold and switch sides. Perfect after long flights!
4. Shoulder Rolls (upper back and shoulders)
Roll your shoulders slowly up, back, and down in a circular motion. Great for shaking off travel tension and carrying bags.
5. Neck Stretch (neck and upper spine)
Gently tilt your head to one side, bringing your ear toward your shoulder. You can add light pressure with your hand for a deeper stretch. Hold, then switch sides.
If you like to stretch with a resistance band (easy to pack into your case), then try the following routine, holding the stretches for 30-60 seconds each side, using a long resistance band, or mix it up and do both :)
1. Hamstring Stretch – Lying Down (hamstrings, calves)
Lie on your back, loop the band around one foot and keep the other leg bent or extended on the floor. Gently pull the band to raise your leg towards your chest, until you feel a stretch. Flex and point your foot for an extra calf stretch.
2. Seated Forward Fold with Band (lower back, hamstrings)
Sit on the ground with your legs extended. Loop the band around both feet and hold the ends. Gently pull forward, keeping your spine long (don’t hunch).
3. Shoulder Stretch – Overhead Pull-Apart (shoulders, chest, upper back)
Stand or sit tall, holding the band overhead with arms straight. Gently pull the band apart, bringing it slightly behind your head. Keep tension and return to start.
4. Hip Flexor Stretch with Band Assistance (hips, quads)
Start a lunge position, with the band looped around your back ankle. Hold the other end in your hand or anchor it in front. Gently pull to deepen the stretch in the front of the hip.
5. Band-Assisted Chest Opener (chest, shoulders)
Stand and hold the band behind your back with both hands. Gently pull the band and lift your hands away from your back to open your chest. Keep your spine tall and breathe deeply.
Stretch, Smile and Make It a Moment
Stretching on holiday doesn’t have to be serious. Make it fun by stretching with a View 😊 Do it on a beach, balcony, mountaintop, or near a scenic spot. Sunrise or sunset makes it feel almost magical.
Stretch outdoors whenever you can – being in nature makes everything feel better. Parks, forests, fields, beaches, or rivers all add a calming, refreshing touch.
Pop on your favourite playlist or an inspiring podcast to keep your mind engaged and make the time fly by.
