Drop It Like a Squat – In Style!

When it comes to achieving your fitness goals, the right workout gear can make all the difference. At W Fitness, our women’s only boutique fitness studio in Horsforth, we understand how important it is to feel confident and comfortable in your fitness clothes. Our supportive environment is designed to help women feel empowered and motivated and that starts with what you wear.

Why does the right clothing matter?

Choosing the appropriate workout clothes isn’t just about style (although many women find that stylish, well-fitting gym wear helps to boost their confidence and keeps them motivated); it’s about functionality and comfort. At W Fitness, we offer a unique 30-minute circuit training programme that combines hydraulic resistance machines and cardio exercises to provide a full-body workout. Wearing breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics can help to regulate your body temperature and keep you comfortable throughout your session. Properly fitted clothing also allows for a full range of motion, which is essential for exercises like Zumba, HIIT and yoga, all of which are part of our diverse class offerings. There are so many fitness leggings and tops out there that this blog would end up being the longest blog ever if I listed them all lol, so here are a few of my favourites, starting with our own, W Fitness, range of clothing which we slowly introducing into the gym – these are really comfortable, moisture wicking and the hoodies are super soft and cosy. They also help you to feel part of our W Fitness club – we’re looking to increase the range to leggings and sports bras too 😊Here we have the lovely Hannah, Sheryl, Adela and Laura modelling the first items to launch which are a vest top, a t-shirt, a quarter zip long sleeve and a hoodie:

Leggings:

  • Lululemon – ‘Align’ have an ultra-soft buttery feel or ‘Wunder Train’ which are sweat-wicking and supportive. 
  • Gymshark – The ‘vital seamless’ or ‘Adapt’ series hug your curves, are squat proof, and are breathable.
  • Sweaty Betty – The ‘power leggings’ (my personal favourite) provide compression, a flattering fit and have handy side pockets. These have been well tested in my Zumba classes and, I can assure you, they don’t move – so no pulling them up halfway through a dance 😊

  • Nike – The ‘one luxe’ or ‘pro’ leggings are sleek, durable, moisture-wicking and made for performance.
  • Under-Armour – The ‘heatgear’ leggings are lightweight but supportive with anti-odor tech.

Tops:

Most workout tops are fine if they fit well, are moisture wicking and are comfortable, but I’ve added a couple that get good reviews if you are looking to treat yourself:

  • Lululemon – ‘Swifty Tech’ or ‘Align Tank’ are lightweight, sweat-wicking and have a seamless comfort.
  • Adidas – ‘Techfit’ or ‘Aeroready’ have a compression fit with ventilation and stretch.

  • Nike – ‘Dri-FIT One’ is a functional basic that works for every type of workout.

What about support?

Apart from the physical support that you get here at W Fitness, also think about the support that your body needs from sports bras down to trainers. The right sports bra helps to support the soft tissue in the breast, it reduces movement during high-impact activities such as running or jumping, reducing strain on ligaments that could lead to sagging over time. It also enhances comfort as they are designed to wick sweat, prevent chafing and provide a snug fit without underwires. Less discomfort means more focus – a well-fitted sports bra allows you to concentrate on your workout rather than adjusting straps or dealing with discomfort. Intense movement can lead to soreness or even long-term tissue damage if unsupported. A Sports bra absorbs impact and distributes pressure evenly. Look at high-impact sports bras for running, HIIT and cardio classes or medium-impact bras for strength training. You can choose from padded or non-padded based on comfort and coverage needs.   • Adidas – best for the gym, HIIT and style-conscious fitness lovers. 
  • Sweaty Betty – best for stylish and supportive options, especially for yoga and medium-impact workouts.

Footwear

Footwear also plays a crucial role in your workout performance and safety. The right pair of trainers provides the necessary support and cushioning to protect your joints during high-impact activities. At W fitness, our classes range from high-energy cardio to strength training, so selecting trainers that offer stability and comfort is key. Here’s a selection of the best trainers for the best workout experience:

  • Nike Metcon (my personal favourite) are designed for CrossFit but, as they offer all-around support, they are also great for HIIT, circuit training, gym workouts and bootcamp classes. These are not specifically designed for running but can handle short sprints or interval running within a mixed workout.

  • Reebok Nano are also designed for CrossFit and provide excellent stability and flexibility during movements like jumping, running and burpees! 😊 They are perfect for fast-paced, high intensity workouts.
  • Under Armour TriBase. These are highly regarded for their stability, support and versatility, making them ideal for a wide range of fitness activities, especially strength training.
  • Nike Pegasus. These are known for their comfort, cushioning and versatility, making them a great choice for a variety of activities. They are particularly good for running and feature Nike’s signature ‘React foam’, providing soft, yest responsive cushioning, which makes them excellent for long-distance running. This helps to reduce impact and ensures comfort on longer runs.
  • Asics Gel-Kayano. These trainers are known for the superior cushioning, stability and support. They are popular with runners, especially long-distance runners. They are great if you need extra arch or heel support.

Now that we have confused you with all the different trainers lol, we recommend trying on different styles and speaking to someone for some in-store guidance, to find the perfect fit for your foot type and workout preferences.
