Is 10 minutes exercise a day enough?

Is 10 minute a day really enough to keep you fit and healthy?

The good news is that yes, it is! 10 minutes of exercise a day can help you to lose weight, along with being in calorie deficit and make a big difference to your health and fitness levels.

Regular exercise is very important and one of the best things that you can do to keep fit and healthy, but it can be hard finding the time to exercise for an hour or more. Studies have shown that short workouts can lower blood pressure, improve your cardiovascular health and decrease mortality as well as improving concentration, boosting your mood and promoting better, deeper sleep.

However, you need to make the most of those 10 minutes. Going for a walk, although really good for you will not have the same effects as a 10-minute intense workout. You need to be doing some form of HIIT workout which alternates between high intensity and rest, eg. 45 seconds of exercise and 15 seconds of rest repeated for a set amount of times. The same can be done with repetitions so, for example, 20 reps of an exercise followed by 10 seconds rest and repeated. HIIT workouts are good as they work several muscle groups at the same time as well as burning more belly fat and boosting your metabolism meaning that you are still burning calories for hours after you have finished exercising whilst your system gets back to it’s pre-workout state.

As well as being enough exercise wise, 10-minute workouts are short enough to fit into your day, whenever you have the time, and they can be done without any equipment. If you want to add weight, you can easily use things that you have lying around the house eg. Tins of beans, bottles of water, fabric conditioner bottles or bags of flour.

If you are new to exercise, or generally unfit, then 10 minutes a day can make a huge difference to your stamina and general health and fitness. Start gradually and build up to 10-minute intense workouts, over an amount of time.  A good way to start is to pick an exercise and see how many repetitions you can do during the adverts of a tv programme and build up from there.

We have produced our HIIT TonedIn10 workouts which offer exercise in 10-minute blocks ranging from beginners to advanced so there is something for everyone as well as the opportunity to progress to the next level for when you are ready to push yourself further. There are many different workouts to choose from such as Targeted Upper Body, Lower Body or Full Body, Stretches and Finishers, and you can choose to do a different once each day or if you have a little more time and energy, you can put two or three together for a longer workout. These workouts are great for improving your endurance and your health.

A study carried out at Boston University has found that 10-minute blocks of exercise added to more mundane tasks such as cleaning, gardening, mowing the lawn or washing the car is enough to make a difference to your body. As the NHS recommend 150 minutes of moderate intensity exercise a week (or only 75 minutes of high intensity), if you combine our TonedIn10 workouts with some of the mundane tasks (i.e cleaning the kitchen) you are easily meeting the NHS goal!
